Under the Triad, collaborative data sets usually provide the greatest value. Collaborative data sets come from a combination of field-based and fixed-laboratory methods. The optimal mix depends on the needs of a specific program. Factors that feed into the decision include the relative per unit costs of analytical options, the total level of analytical work expected, the turn-around times required for analyses, the analytical quality of various options, and the level of regulatory acceptability for various options. Fixed-laboratory methods can often provide "real-time" results (i.e., quick turn-around), albeit at higher costs. Conversely, some field-based methods, with appropriate QA/QC in place, can provide analytical data quality equal to or better than standard fixed-laboratory analyses.
